Updates for existing models like the Virtus and Taigun were revealed by Volkswagen at its Annual Brand Conference 2024, along with the official debut of the ID.4, showing VW India’s shift to electrification. With the unveiling, Volkswagen India takes a significant step closer to transitioning from internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles. The ID.4, which has been on sale globally for some time, is the second EV from VW and is based on the MEB platform. There are both single-motor and dual-motor versions available overseas, with the single-motor version being powered by a 58kWh battery pack and the dual-motor version, known as the ID.4 GTX, featuring a 77kWh battery pack.

With around 200bhp and 310Nm generated by the rear motor, and approximately 110bhp and 162Nm by the front motor, the VW ID.4 achieves a zero to 100kmph acceleration in 6.2 seconds, marginally faster than the Golf GTI by one tenth of a second. The ID.4 offers a WLTP-claimed driving range of 479km on a full charge. According to VW’s electrification plan, sales of its purely electric models were more than tripled in 2021-2022, with the aim to become the global leader for electric mobility by 2025. Over the next five years, investments of around 46 billion euros are planned for electric mobility and fleet hybridisation, with the expectation that up to 70 percent of vehicles in Europe will be purely electric by 2030.
