Maruti Suzuki is set to take a significant step in its electric vehicle (EV) journey by the end of this fiscal year with the commencement of production of its electric cars at its Gujarat plant. Maruti eVX is going to be the first electric car in India by Maruti, which the automaker has announced will be exported, with European markets being the first overseas recipients. This marks a pivotal moment for Maruti’s EV ambitions, following its earlier announcement regarding the export of lithium-ion batteries. The company is making substantial investments, close to Rs 10,000 crore, over the next few years to advance its EV strategy at the Gujarat facility.
Maruti Suzuki’s highly anticipated eVX was first showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo and later at the 2023 Japanese Mobility Show, demonstrating its potential as an SUV with a range of around 550km and a 60kWh battery pack. The Japanese Mobility Show provided insights into the eVX’s design and features, revealing its production-ready shape with design elements inspired by the Grand Vitara. Additionally, the eVX is expected to spawn a Toyota model, as showcased with the Toyota Urban SUV concept in late 2023.
Maruti’s entry into the EV market comes at a time when other competitors like Hyundai, Kia, and Mahindra have already established multiple models in the segments where Maruti has traditionally been strong. The Maruti eVX will face stiff competition from the Hyundai Creta EV, Kia Carens EV, and Mahindra XUV.e8. How Maruti plans to position the eVX in terms of features, charging infrastructure, and after-sales service will be crucial in determining its success in this competitive landscape.
