Mercedes Benz C Class – Baby S-Class

  • By Sohan Ingole

Introduction-

After the E-Class facelift Mercedes Benz India revealed its another sedan in the market, this time they placed it below the E-Class and baby S-Class is what they called it. After very long time Mercedes Benz finally launched its 6th generation of C-Class in India, comparing this new generation with the S-Class. Yes, it’s design is very much similar to the S-Class and shares lots of bit inside and out also.

Mercedes Benz takes the first generation of C-Class in India at early 2000 and they continued this till now and in 2020 they launched its updated version in global market. And now we have it in India, currently C-Class is offered in 3 variants which is C220, C220d and C300d. The c300d is an AMG line trim where we get some additional sporty elements and chrome work then regular trim.

Engine and Performance-

Well in this new C-Class we have three engine options, 1.5 litre petrol motor, 2.0 litre diesel motor and last one is 2.0 litre diesel motor with additional power. We are reviewing the c300d variant which gets a 2.0 litre four cylinder diesel unit which produces 261bhp of power with redlines at 4500Rpm and 550Nm of torque with redlines at 2000Rpm. This unit is mated to a 9 speed Torque converter gearbox which is quite fast in shifts.

All the engine options are coming with 48V mild hybrid system which helps it to give an better fuel efficiency. On road this diesel unit will give you 20kmpl fuel economy which is claimed but in real world it will give you fuel efficiency in between 10 to 14kmpl. To charge this hybrid system it also regenerates and converts kinetic energy into electric energy. The overall result is it goes 0 to 100kmph in just 5.5 seconds which is briskly quick, the low end punch is missing here but as we go beyond 3000Rpm it absolutely lunges ahead and disappear in seconds.

Midrange is punchy juicy here which has that grunt to pull hard this C-Class, ride quality is soft still it misses adaptive dampers. We have to go slowly on bad roads and big bumps, even on the expansion joints it loves to jump. To improve the performance of the vehicle it also gets four driving modes- Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual. In eco mode it drives gently and tries to give you best fuel efficiency, comfort mode is mix of sport mode and eco mode where it provides a best ride to you. Sport mode changes this sedan into a complete beast, this cause the fuel economy drops suddenly but the performance is beyond the imagination. Individual mode gives you control to change some settings inside this sedan. Where you can customise lot of things as your wish.

Most of the people are going to buy c220 or c220d trim which is more fuel efficient than this but it doesn’t have this kick in pants feelings. That petrol unit produces 201bhp of power and 300Nm of torque, this 1.5litre unit is also capable for hard pulls but cause this is petrol it loves to drink fuel. Overall this 2.0 litre Diesel engine is briskly quick with a beast amount of 550Nm of torque, this engine will put fire your pants.

Exterior-

This C-Class is 4751mm longer, 2033mm wider and 1437mm taller. It’s wheelbase is 2033mm and ground clearance is on lower side. This new generation is 65mm more longer than earlier trim and increased the wheelbase by 25mm.

It’s ground clearance is lowered by 7mm and in AMG line it was lowered down by additional 15mm for better dynamics and performance. The ground clearance is very low here, we have to drive the vehicle very carefully on bad roads and big bumps, or its underbody will touch down. Starting from the front we get honey trap grill with chrome finished big Mercedes Benz logo upfront, chrome strip joins the headlights to that logo which we seen in lots of Mercedes Benz cars.

The headlights are all digital unit which gets 1.3 million micro mirrors and 2.6 million pixel per car, which we already seen this in S-Class. This 1.3 million micro mirrors automatically refracts lights and able to throw the light till 650 meters. Their is one led drl which turns side indicators also and looks super amazing as well, cause this are digital lights it don’t get fog lamps either.

This digital headlights are only available in AMG line, other trim gets regular projector lights. Bumper gets some sporty elements with aluminium linings also. This AMG line gets 18 inch AMG alloys, regular trims gets 17 inches. From side it is very identical to A Class, we have chrome finished door handles and black coloured roof which is standard in all trims.

Rear part is very much similar to the S-Class, thanks to the taillights and bumper. Taillights are same S-Class unit which is also all led’s , bumper gets two fake exhaust tips which is chrome finished and black in colour. Overall exterior is very much inspired from S-Class and looks classy as well, the quality and boldness is from another league which make this C-Class even more attractive.

Interior-

Inside this new 2022 C-Class we have multicoloured interior, we have lots of customisable options in it. Firstly we have S-Class inspired dashboard style which is actually similar unit. We have neatly leather finished and soft touch crafted dashboard, below that we have carbon like finished panel which runs end to end in the cabin.

Most of the places we got soft touch material but in lowered half of the dashboard we have hard plastic. Centre console gets a 11.9 inch massive LCD touchscreen infotainment system, this screen is very identical to S-class. In this unit we have radio, air conditioning controls, media, 3D navigation, vehicle settings, car settings, android auto and apple car play, voice commands, Mercedes me Connect, biometric security and more.

This screen is reduced in size, S-Class got 12.8 inch OLED screen but here we have LCD screen. That’s the only difference in this unit which is in screen type and screen size, left is all the same. Even the software, resolution, graphics and quality is same as the before. Below that screen there are some manual controls with a fingerprint scanner, centre console gets all black chrome finishing which is hard to keep clean and big fingerprint magnet also.

We have cooled wireless charging pad, some USB’s, cup holders and one massive centre armrest with lots of storage space inside it. Their are three chrome finished AC vents which are placed above that screen and two at the opposite ends of dashboard. Steering wheel is flat bottom and gets electric adjust, that wheel have mounted controls and typical AMG like gear stock to operate the vehicle. Earlier generation gets actual switches but now it have touch sensible controls which is amazing but not intuitive to use.

That touch sensible controls operate that 12.3 inch all digital instrument cluster which is identical to S-Class. In this screen we have engine information, TPMS, 3D navigation, media controls, vehicle settings and lots of themes for customisation. The front seats are top notch level of quality with comfort, they are best in its segment with improved the quality of leather and side bolstering.

Looking to the dashboard from rear seats, sometimes we can feel seating inside in the S-Class that’s the quality of dashboard. Coming to the rear seats we have 3 height adjustable headrest with a centre armrest, the seats are quite comfortable with ample amount of headroom and under thighs support. But legroom is bit issue here, cause the wheelbase is not much great here they managed to keep it below the E-Class and that’s why the legroom is not much impressive here.

Overall seat comfort is ok here, in that addition we also have rear sun blinds, AC vents and more. Cabin is airy, roomy feels nice and spacious thanks to the dual pane sunroof and big window lines.

Comfort and Convenience-

In this 6th generation C-Class we have some really cool features like 750W 15 speakers Burmester surround sound system, 64 colours Ambient Lighting, wireless charging pad, dual pane sunroof,

automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, automatic climate control, puddle lamps, electric adjustable steering wheel, rear sun blinds, digital lights, voice commands and Mercedes me connect which gets lots of tech like vehicle monitoring, geo fencing,

remote engine start stop, Mercedes Benz emergency call system, voice commands, Google Home and Amazon Alexa integration and more.

Safety and tech-

This Mercedes Benz C-Class gots high on safety which gets all the regular features and additionally active brake assist, Mercedes Benz pre safe system,

rear parking camera and front and rear parking sensors, active park assist and PARKTRONIC, TPMS, tyre change tool kit and more. Now this C-Class is offered in 6 colours options.

  1. Obsidian Black
  2. Mojave Silver
  3. Selenite Grey Metallic
  1. Hi-Tech Silver
  2. Cavansite Blue Metallic
  3. Manufaktur Opalite White Bright

Conclusion-

The price of this new 6th generation 2022 Mercedes Benz C-Class starts from 55.00 L and goes till 61.00 L (Ex-showroom Delhi). In this price segment it will rival with BMW 3 series gran limo, BMW 3 series, Mercedes Benz E-Class, Audi A6, BMW 5 series, Audi A4, Mercedes Benz GLC, Mercedes Benz A Class limo, Mercedes Benz GLA. Mercedes Benz done a decent job in this premium sedan, where they costs it below the E-Class. We also get the LWB in this C-Class but that will come letter in the market, yes compared to its rivals they priced it bit on costlier side.

But Mercedes Benz itself called this C-Class a baby S-Class and they tried to match the S-Class by adding lots of similar design and tech. This is a really good package where we get baby S-Class in low price with ample amount of power and also all the new age safety features. This C-Class is best for who wants a mid size luxurious sedan which has a tons of features and also a peppy engine unit.
