Tata Tiago i-CNG- Decent Performance But Small Boot

  • by Sohan Ingole

Introduction –

Well now the fuel prices are going upwards like crazy and it already touched 100₹ per litre, EV’s are taking charge over it but lack of chargers and charging time is the main drawback of these green coloured number plate vehicles. But still we have a option of CNG (compressed natural gas) in this market, in India Maruti Suzuki manufactures most of the CNG cars. And in between these Tata launched its most selling hatchback with CNG kit, yes now we have Tata Tiago in the CNG option, Tata called it i-CNG. In this update only change is under the hood, most of the things are remains unchanged here.

These cars are nature friendly making low gas emissions and also pocket friendly. Now in India, the rate of 1KG CNG is 75₹ – Delhi NCR (rates maybe different in other regions in India). And the cost of 1 litre Petrol is already crossed 100₹, still we can save a lots of money with using a CNG vehicle. Most of the CNG vehicles gets a option of petrol power also, which means we can decide whether we want to run the vehicle on CNG gas or Petrol. Sometimes there is no availability of CNG pumps or we want more power, so we have that option of switching the car on petrol mode. And using this Trump card Tata launched its Tiago with CNG powertrain option. Now this Tiago i-CNG is available in 5 trims with a special dual tone paint option also.

Engine and Performance-

Under its hood we get 1.2 litre 3 cylinder unit which produces 72bhp of power with redlines at 6000Rpm and 95Nm of torque with redlines at 3500Rpm, which is mated to a 6 speed manual transmission.

This unit is powered by both CNG and petrol which can be changed by pressing a switch. The CNG trims weighs 100 kg more than regular variant thanks to the CNG tank and added mechanical parts. Regular petrol powered Tiago produces 86bhp of power and 113Nm  of torque. In this CNG trim it reduced by 13bhp and 18Nm, we all know that CNG will eat that power and tries to give us best fuel efficiency then petrol. Now Tata claimed that this Tiago i-CNG give you 26.05 KMPL average fuel economy. It’s rivals are offering us the fuel economy 30+ KMPL, still this is best in the market now. Cause now most of the cars are hardly giving fuel economy in great numbers. We have 35 litres of petrol tank with a 60L (water holding capacity) of CNG tank. Now the performance is linear nut punchy also, in CNG power it drives very silently without any hustle.

This is convenient for city drives or for economy driving, but if we want extreme power. We can switch it to the Petrol power and as we switch it to the petrol power it absolutely lunges ahead and we can see the difference very easily. In petrol mode it redlines very hardly and has that grunt, but all this is missing in the CNG. But no one can match the fuel economy of the CNG trim, this is the truth. Still the overall performance is better here, Tata tried the feel and feedback from this motor.

Somehow it never feels like a CNG, we can use this Tiago i-CNG on city driving where jams are crazy and we have to keep moving from narrow roads or from bumper to bumper traffic. Because of the small dimensions and great manoeuvrability this Tiago i-CNG can go from narrow roads also without any trouble.

Exterior-

Dimensions of the CNG trim remains unchanged, this Tiago is 3765mm longer, 1677mm wider and 1535mm taller. Ground clearance is 170mm and wheelbase is 2400mm. Weight of this Tiago i-CNG is 1087kg which is increased by 100kg, thanks to the added CNG tank. Starting from the front we have black coloured typical Tata style tri arrow grill with chrome strip which is connecting the headlights.

Headlight unit is a projector setup with halogen indicators and fog lamps, drl is placed bit lowered down at the front. The front design is very identical to the Tigor, so sometimes it’s bit confusing between both of them. When we see the car, both of them differentiate very easily. Vehicle is running on 14 inch steel wheels with wheel cap which is very similar to the alloy wheels. The CNG trim missed out that alloy wheels whereas its XZA plus trim gets alloy wheels which is a petrol powered version.

Door handles now gets chrome finishing on it, that chrome treatment looks better than earlier. Wheel cap design is very attractive and appealing, most of the time it looks like a alloy wheel but it’s a steel wheel end of the day. ORVM’s are finished in black coloured and gets electric adjust with auto fold function also. Coming to the rear, it gets additional chrome line running throughout the tailgate which is placed below the parking camera.

Taillights are all halogen unit with parking camera and parking sensors. On that tailgate we have additional i-CNG badging which directly tells that this is a CNG powered car. The difference between the regular trim and the i-CNG trims is that additional chrome work which is done very well and looks better now, most of the things remains unchanged here. Still they added some extra spicy bits which gives a clean sharp looks to the Tiago.

Interior-

Coming to the interior, we have dual tone theme with plain simple dashboard which gets hard plastic. Interior is finished in hard plastic where we don’t get any soft touch material. Dashboard design is unchanged where we have 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system which is a loaded unit, inside this screen we have android auto and apple car play, vehicle settings, radio, media, navigation, safety settings and lots of themes.

Comparing this screen  with its rivals, this system is better and make the job done but the resolution and graphics needs improvement. This infotainment unit is placed middle of the dashboard, below that screen we have air conditioning controls. Centre console is very much loaded here we have charging ports, two cup holders and some cubby holes. We don’t get centre armrest here, instead of this we have lots of cubby holes and open storage space where we can put lots of stuff.

Steering wheel is taken from Altroz, we have mounted controls on it. The steering is adjustable in many ways which is convenient to use. Coming to the instrument cluster, we get digital speedometer with a 5 inch screen at the centre which shows lots of information about the vehicle. Front seats are nice and comfy, centre armrest will improve the overall convenience but still the front seats are comfortable enough.

Like that the second row is quite spacious with two fixed headrest, we don’t get three headrest and even they are fixed. Seats are comfortable bit with ample amount of headroom and knee room, but under thighs support is bit an issue here. Still compared to its rivals, the seats are comfortable for two people and a tight fit for three people.

Inside its tailgate we have a CNG tank fitted there with a parcel shelf lying above that, there is also one spare wheel which is placed below that CNG tank. If we want to access that we have to recline down the second row seats and then we can access it. Boot space is practically not available or 0 here, that CNG tank eats up the boot which left 0 litres of boot space here, still we have a option of reclining the second row seats in full part and take that liberty to increase the boot space.

But practicality if we don’t recline that seats we have 0 litres of space, we can put our small luggage bags on the parcel shelf but it distracts your IRVM. Interior of the vehicle is very much similar to the earlier one, still Tata tried to give some extra punchy beats like auto AC and lots more.

Comfort and Convenience-

Inside this Tiago i-CNG we have new age tech like, 8 speakers Harmon Kardon music system, 17.78cm touchscreen infotainment system, fully automatic air conditioning system, steering mounted controls,

height adjustable driver seat, digital instrument cluster, auto retractable irvm, cooled glove box, height adjustable front headrest, cup holders, charging ports and more.

Safety and Tech-

In this Tata Tiago i-CNG we have lots of safety and tech features like 2 airbags, ABS And EBD, ESP, over speed warning, rear parking camera with parking sensors, corner stability control,

rear wiper and defogger and tyre inflammation kit also. Thanks to all these features, Tiago scored 4 stars in Global NCAP.

  1. Flame Red
  2. Opal White
  3. Daytona Grey
  4. Arizona Blue
  5. Midnight Plum

Conclusion –

The price of the Tiago i-CNG variant starts from 6.27L to 7.79L (Ex-showroom Delhi), in this budget price slot it compete with Hyundai grand i10 Nios, Maruti Suzuki WagonR, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Tata Punch, Tata Tigor, Hyundai Sandro, Tata Altroz, Maruti Suzuki Ignis.

This Tata Tiago i-CNG is very impressive hatch with lots of practical bits inside it. Now fuel prices are increasing like cats, dogs and monkeys, in between this a CNG car is really value for money option for you which gives you great fuel economy and also cheaper in price.
