Skoda Kodiaq Facelift, Versatile SUV with great packaging

  • by Sohan Ingole

Introduction-

Škoda has known for its luxury and great looking sedans but now this Czech car maker going deep in suv market with its Kushaq and now with the Kodiaq facelift. Dealing with its upcoming sedan Slavia, Skoda has launched the facelift of Kodiaq in the market with minor changes at interior and exterior. But the one big major change is that missing Diesel engine, stopped diesel engines by VW group in India gives us Petrol unit in this new Kodiaq. So this German suv is offered in three variants- Style, Sportline, Laurin and Klement (L and K).

Engine and Performance-

This Kodiaq is built under MQBAO platform, this suv is not made on Indian platform so this is a pure hearted German suv. Under its massive curvy hood we gets VW’s popular 2.0 litre TSI petrol unit which produces 190bhp of power with redlines at between 4200RPM to 6200RPM and 320Nm of torque with redlines at between 1500RPM to 4300RPM. This TSI unit is paired with a 7 speed DSG unit and the performance is, it goes 0 to 100KMPH in just 7.8 seconds, looking to the massive weight of the vehicle it is quite good and makes the job done.

It also capable for off-road thanks to the 4WD system, because of the 4×4 the grip of the vehicle is next level which helps you on wet roads, it also comes with 6 drive modes (Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, Individual and Snow). This driving modes can definitely alter the performance of the vehicle and helps us on bad terrain. The midrange of the rave range is strong and pulls very hard but in the top end it completely vocal and changed into a beast, the ride quality is very soft and now it also gets dynamic chassis control which in simple language it called as adaptive dampers. This DCC makes the ride very comfortable and firm.

Looking to the performance and weight of the vehicle, we already know that this unit cannot give us double digits fuel economy. In long runs it can stretched upto 10 to 11 KMPL, but in city driving it can take the fuel economy around 6 to 7 KMPL.

Exterior-

The length of the suv is 4699mm, width is 1882mm and height is 1655mm. Ground clearance is ample enough for bad terrains, starting from the front it gets lifted face with new chrome finished Skoda grill which the kodiaq and slavia already gets. The headlights is revised now and gets Skoda’s crystal lighting with headlamp washer also, on its wide bumper we get front parking camera and parking sensors with some air curtains for better efficiency. The vehicle runs on 18 inches dual tone alloys with all wheel disc brakes, the door handles are body coloured with all doors request sensors. The orvm is too big and provides good view, it also comes with puddle lamp and automatic retractable function, in this feature when we slot the gear in reverse it automatically tilts and shows us the corner view.

The roof of the vehicle is massive and gets silver roof rails, shark fin antenna and a massive panoramic sunroof. The tail of the vehicle is in typical Skoda language which gets all led taillights with dynamic swipe indicators and S-K-O-D-A written in the centre. Personally I love the tail of all Skoda cars, but this Kodiaq has already the next level tailgate in his rivals, the rear bumper gets fake exhaust tips with parking sensors and parking camera on it.

The tailgate gets electric open and close function, under its hot looking tailgate we get 270 litres of boot space with third row up, but if we recline the third row in 50:50 split then it gets 680 litres of boot carrying capacity. We can also recline the second row in 40:20:40 ratio, after reclining all the rows we also can fit one Kushaq inside it that is the level of boot space it offers.

The exterior of the vehicle is very attractive and sexy, where it gets the best look exterior in its rivals thanks to that lots of cuts and crises on the body.

Interior-

Coming to the interior it gets dual tone theme with leather finished seats and door pads, the dashboard is very clean and looks very premium. Under its dashboard we have two glove boxes which gets decent amount of space, but the first one gets piano black finish on it which is a big finger print magnet also.

The centre console gets 8 inch new touchscreen infotainment system which equipped with lots of tech inside it like wireless android auto and apple car play, radio, media, navigation, driving settings, smart link, telephone, driver assistance, compass, inclinometer, temperature meter and more. Below this screen we have air conditioning controls and some charging ports with one wireless charging pad also.

Around that DSG gear liver we have electric parking brake, esc on-off switch and some other vehicle controls. Now the steering wheel is revised and we gets new two spoke unit with mounted controls on it which controls that digital cockpit. This digital cockpit gets lots of tech like TPMS, inclinometer, temperature meter, trip meter and 5 modes for cluster. The front seats are very comfortable and cosy, body will correctly fit inside it and gives us adequate amount of support.

We have lots of storage options inside the cabin thanks to that slide able centre armrest and lots of chubby hole. In the second row we have three seats with three height adjustable headrest, because of the sliding function for second row legroom and knee room is not an issue. We get ample amount of space in second row and two elders with one child can seat comfortably for long routes also.

But in third row legroom, knee room and headroom is bit issue, this row is good for children but makes the job done. The interior of the vehicle is neat and don’t feel claustrophobic, thanks to the panoramic sunroof and big window arch. Looking to its rivals sometimes sunroof can be USP’s of this German suv.

Comfort and Convenience-

In 2021 Kodiaq we have lots of tech inside it like 620W 12 speakers Canton sound system with subwoofer also, umbrella holder, 10 colours ambient lighting,

automatic headlights, automatic wipers, electrical adjustable driver and co driver seats with memory function also, ventilated front seats, second row sun blinds, powered tailgate with gesture control, puddle lamp, headlamp washer and more.

Safety and Tech-

In safety we have 9 airbags, ABS and EBD, brake assist, electronic stability program, hill hold control, traction control, hill descent control, TPMS, seat belt warning, isofix child seat anchor, over speed warning,

360 degree parking camera with front and rear parking sensors, electric parking brake, self park, multi collision braking and more. So thanks to it’s all safety features, Skoda Kodiaq scored 5 stars in Euro NCAP. This suv comes with 6 colour options.

1. Lava Blue Metallic
2. Moon White Metallic
3. Magic Blue Metallic

4. Race Blue Metallic
5. Steel Grey Metallic
6. Graphite Grey metallic

Conclusion-

The price of 2021 Skoda Kodiaq starts from 34.99L to 37.49L (Ex-showroom Delhi),

looking to its price this Kodiaq will compete with Toyota Fortuner, Jeep MeridianMG GlosterVolkswagen Tiguan, BMW X1, Skoda SuperbJeep CompassCitroen C5 Aircross. Compared this Skoda Kodiaq facelift with its rivals, the kodiaq is bit costlier. But looking to its attractive design, best in class features , splendid interior, infinity space, ample amount of power, new age tech makes this Kodiaq far better in its rivals.
